Allergies kicking my butt

Monday, November 30, 2009 by Matt

My allergies have been extremely disruptive over the past month or so. Every year when fall merges into winter, I get very bad allergy symptoms. It's been like this since I was little - I was born with some lung problems which led to asthma and me being in a ventilator unit when I was really small (I remember looking out through the plastic sides).

In any event, lately I sneeze like it's going out of style. My nose and sinuses are so clogged, they make heading into the Chicago "loop" during rush hour at 8 AM seem clear. I don't remember the last time I breathed through my nose.

But I get by. Although annoying to me, and those around me, I can still function and enjoy things. It's not until real sinus pressure or head colds kick in that it becomes a full-blown illness.

Yesterday our neighbors to the south were having a party (presumably for the Bears/Vikings game), and they were smoking heavily. The odor seeped into our townhome through the vents, and I started feeling very ill - my head and sinuses were in pain.

I slept well last night, and feel much better today. Let's hope it was just the cigarette smoke that was bothering me.

Michelle and I joke that with all of our distinct allergy symptoms combined, our kids will be living in bubbles! (Sort of like that ventilator I was in.)
